Dr. Liz Opoka 2

About Me

I’m Liz Opoka, Doctor of Physical Therapy (PT, DPT). I have been interested in fitness and healthy living since I was a teenager, swimming in the ocean and riding my bike on the Rockaway boardwalk, while taking yoga and TaiChi classes at 17 and studying books on alternative medicine, herbs and chakra theory. In mid-life, I decided to leave the corporate world and move toward the healing professions. Physical therapy made the most sense, in that I wouldn’t be pushing pharmaceuticals as a primary means of treatment, I’d be singing the praises of exercise and fitness. I went back to school and earned my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Hunter College (CUNY/City University of New York).

Since then, I have taken courses in manual therapy to better learn how to use my hands for listening and healing. I’ve studied visceral mobilization, craniosacral therapy, functional movement & spinal health. I believe the “issues are in the tissues” and that a pair of skilled hands is vital in releasing stuck energy, pain and restrictions.

In addition to my 200-hour yoga teacher training, I have 300 hours in therapeutic yoga, including Ayurveda. This training is incredibly practical for helping people with chronic pain, dysautonomia, gut disorders and anxiety. I also happen to love working with feet and totally nerd out on “sensible” footwear for walking, working out and life.

I have years of experience working in various settings, including clinics, outpatient rehabilitation and home health. When providing care in a client’s home, I get really creative really fast. Soup cans and soda bottles become hand weights. A cane is the perfect tool to ease up a stiff shoulder. Where better to learn how to exercise safely but in your own home and neighborhood? I love empowering people to regain control and self-reliance. Let’s do this together!

A lifelong New Yorker, I was born in NYC and have been a Brooklyn resident for nearly 30 years. I’ve been providing care and kindness to New Yorkers since 2013.
